What Is Gur? A Guide to Traditional Indian Jaggery

Gur, also known as jaggery, is a traditional unrefined sweetener made from sugarcane and enjoyed across India for generations. It has a deep, caramel-like flavour that is very different from white sugar, which is why it is loved in sweets, tea-time treats and festive cooking.

Where Sona began

Sona launched in 2016 with just two products, Gur (jaggery) and Shakkar (jaggery powder). Today the range has grown to over 50 products, but gur is still at the heart of what we do.

Ways to enjoy gur

  • As a simple sweet after a meal, in a traditional gur block or 1kg pack.
  • In gur-based sweets such as gachak, rewri, patti, shalimar and khaista roll.
  • Alongside a cup of chai at tea time.
